Civic Organizations in Huron County

There are a number of dedicated civic organizations in Huron County that work year round to help improve our communities. Read this article to learn more about them and see how you can help!

When we come together for a cause, so much good can be accomplished in and around the thumb. Huron County is home to countless civic organizations. Learn a little more about these important organizations and how you can get involved, below!

American Legion

The American Legion was founded in 1919 and has since become the largest veterans service organization in America. Committed to mentoring youth, they sponsor wholesome activities all over the country. They also advocate for patriotism and honor in addition to helping fellow service member veterans.

  • Did you know they have an American Legion Baseball program? It’s one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs that educates young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship, and fitness.

  • The Operation Comfort Warriors program supports recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing them with "comfort items" and the kind of support that makes a hospital feel a little bit more like home.

  • The Legion also raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families during times of need.

Like most civic organizations, the American Legion relies entirely on active membership, participation, and volunteerism. The American Legion belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

Fraternal Order of Eagles

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization founded in 1898. Their name denotes their national emblem, the Bald Eagle. There motto is "people helping people." Did you know that since 1898, the F.O.E. has played a key role in the creation of Mother’s Day, Social Security, Medicare and more thanks to a dedicated membership base working daily throughout the United States and Canada to help friends and neighbors in need? The F.O.E. also gives back 100 percent of monies raised in the form of grants.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles has nearly 1,600 locations across the United States and Canada, dedicated to improving our communities and helping others. Huron County is proud to be home to one F.O.E. Aerie in Caseville.

Kiwanis

Kiwanis is a global volunteer organization dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, and became an international organization soon after. Kiwanis organizations across the globe carry out nearly 150,000 service projects, devote more than 6 million hours of service and raise nearly US$100 million every year for communities, families, and projects.

Lions Clubs

Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 and is the largest service club organization in the world. The club and its 1.4 million members provide valuable service in 210 countries and geographic areas around the globe. Lions are “friends, family, and neighbors who share a core belief: community is what we make it.” Programs span international relations, community and environment, youth, disaster relief, and health programs and assistance.

The Rotary’s motto is “service above self.”

It is an international organization that brings together businesses and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations, and to enhance goodwill and peace on earth. The organization is open to people of all races and ethnicities, religious preferences, gender, and political preference. It is a guiding purpose to develop friendships as an opportunity for service.

Chambers of Commerce are dedicated to the communities they serve and advocate on behalf of local business. There are many Chambers in Huron County doing great things for the communities we live in.

Friends of Elkton | Elkton Community Club

After 35 years of inactivity, the Elkton Community Club was put back together in 2016. The Elkton Community Club puts on Autumnfest as well as the Downtown Trunk Or Treat during the fall. The Friends of Elkton host The Elkton Christmas Celebration. Another group working on behalf of the community is Huron Youth in Elkton. They put on the Easter Egg Hunt. Elkton Lions donate and support all the events and have helped a number of families in town over the years.

Huron County Community Foundation

The Huron County Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity created by and for the people of Huron County. They provide a simple, powerful and highly personal approach to giving, offering a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals.

The Huron County YPN started in January of 2016 and continued to bring together like-minded professionals under the age of 30 who live and work in Huron County. The YPN is a valuable resource for young professionals in the area to network, meet new people, and for those who have recently moved to the area, get acclimated with Huron County.

Huron County History

The Huron County Historical Society (HCHS) is made up of a number of different local organizations across the county that are devoted to the preservation and presentation of Huron County’s rich history. Every year the organizations put together the Huron County Free Museum Weekend, a weekend full of fun and history all for free! Loving, Giving, Serving All, Port Austin

"Loving, Giving, Serving All, Port Austin (LGSAPA) is a 501(c)(3) that has been working on planning and implementing community projects to increase tourism and make Port Austin a more livable community. These projects in conjunction with the Village of Port Austin have included developing pop-up retail and a stage on an underutilized lot in the downtown business community, creative crosswalks at intersections around town, artistic bike racks, movable community seating at the park overlooking Lake Huron, street sized art sculptures around town, beautification projects on main streets, creative wayfinding signage and Porch Fest (a free day of music on porches all around town).

LGSAPA's most current priority is working with the Port Austin Lions Club on their Centennial Project to re purpose an underutilized park and adding a butterfly house and community garden for the 2017 season. Through their Greater Port Austin Art and Placemaking Fund (www.portaustinart.org), LGSAPA is currently working with local high school art classes to create and display installation art pieces around town. In addition, and based on the communities input, they have made it a goal to apply for grants and help to build layers of art, large to small, with international artists, local artists and budding high school artists. Layers of surprise and delight.

Bluewater Thumb Youth For Christ / Campus Life

YFC reaches youth throughout the county by working together with local churches and other like-minded partners to raise up lifelong followers of Jesus and serve the community. The YFC puts together many events throughout the year, including the Annual Christmas Benefit Auction that took place in November. 

Greater Huron County United Way

The Greater Huron County United Way is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations that raises money from payroll deductions and generous donations from area businesses.  Each year they grant out the money to local non-profit organizations.
