Property Demolitions Underway in Sandusky
24 S Morse Street during the demolition process
Demolition efforts are officially underway in Sandusky this month as part of the ongoing work funded by the Blight Elimination Program grant awarded to the Sanilac County Land Bank Authority in 2023. Residents may have already noticed activity at the two Morse Street properties—24 S Morse Street and 36 S Morse Street—as Bolle Contracting begins the process of demolishing the properties and clearing the sites.
This is a major step forward in the Sanilac County Land Bank’s efforts to address blight and revitalize local communities. Once demolition is complete, these two parcels will be repurposed to expand public parking in the existing lot behind businesses located at the northeastern end of Elk Street. This change will not only enhance the appearance of the area but also improve accessibility for visitors and support continued downtown growth.
The Morse Street demolition work was briefly delayed due to Michigan’s seasonal frost laws, but with the restrictions now lifted, crews have moved quickly to get started. Bolle Contracting, which secured the contract through a bidding process for all demolition work across Sanilac County through this program, is also handling demolitions in Applegate and Lexington slated to be complete by August. This project is part of a larger, statewide initiative through the Blight Elimination Program, a state and federally funded effort to reinvest in communities by removing or repurposing vacant or deteriorated properties. The goal is to boost neighborhood vitality, attract future investment, and create spaces that contribute to the economic and social health of our communities.
