Winter Activities in the Thumb!

Looking out the window right now, the first thought isn't where to enjoy the winter, it's where is the winter? 2016 has shaped up thus far to be a mild winter, though there is still ample time for plenty of flakes to fly. If you're one to follow the Michigan groundhog, he assured us yesterday that Michigan will see at least another six weeks of winter so there's still a chance to get some use out of those sleds and snow suits.

If you’re looking to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and some winter activities, we’ve got a few suggestions for you!

  • Harbor Beach:  Sledding hill next to the “tank” by Judge James H. Lincoln Memorial Park
  • Bad Axe:  Kindergarten Hill across from St. Huberts Sacred Heart Church
  • Pigeon:  Sledding Hill in Pigeon Recreation Park behind the little league fields

Cross Country Skiing:

Huron County features no shortage of cross country skiing opportunities. If you do not have your own skis you can start by renting some from Heins Hardware in Port Austin. From there, you’ve got at least 5 public locations to choose from for cross country skiing:

Snowmobile Trails:

The Thumbs Up Snowmobile Club is a great place to start if you’re new to riding in the Thumb region. The club represents more than just Huron County and they have worked extensively to create and groom over 50 miles of trails in the Thumb, and they provide a map of these trails for riders. They’ve partnered with the DNR to create signage and establish trailheads that are convenient throughout the Thumb region.

Ice Track Quad & Snowmobile Races:

Attend one of the Ice Breaker Racing Series Ice Races at the MPX Raceway in Sebewaing! These events are fun for the whole family. Bundle up, grab a cup of hot cocoa from one of the vendors at the track, and join the community bon fire or bring your own refreshments and watch from your vehicle.

What do you and your family do for fun when the snow falls in Huron County? Did we miss something that we should list above for others to enjoy? Leave your comments below!
